Cat Adoption

5 Handy tips on how to prepare for cat adoption

Adopting a new cat is quite an exciting time since it’s basically welcoming a new family member. However, if you are unsure of what to supplies or precautions to take, it can end up becoming quite a stressful situation. Fortunately, the tips below could come in handy in making you and your home prepared for your new feline friend.

Litter area

Preparing a personal space for the cat is perhaps the first thing on your agenda. Your shopping list should include a litter tray, food dish, water dispenser/bowl, poop scooper, and a hideaway bed for them to snug safely. A cat carrier is another inclusion in the shopping list if you are planning to comfortably carry the cat around.

Quality food

It is a good idea to seek advice on the cat-specific food to make sure they get the nutrients they need and also enjoy their meal. Also, make sure that the cat is hydrated enough with the water point always filled with water.

Purchase toys

Toys offer the perfect companionship and distraction against boredom. Toys such as balls offer the much needed physical and mental stimulation for the cat. In addition to toys, a scratching post is also considered essential as a place for the cat to practice their natural instincts such as depositing pheromones.

Get a health check

No matter the condition of the cat, a veterinarian appointment is essential to get up-to-date shots against various cat illnesses. Also, keep in mind that the cat may have picked up infections or viruses from other felines. A new environment would, therefore, necessitate a vet visit to ensure the immune system is in the best form.

Cat proof the house

While the major focus is on the newly adopted cat, your home should also be considered on the list. A good idea is to close up spaces, rooms or places in the house that the cat may get stuck into. You would also need to keep potentially harmful products such as detergents, coffee, garlic etc. away from the cat’s access.

Be prepared

Now that you are armed with the basic knowledge in preparing for a new feline, you can rest be assured that all the kitty would need from now on is your attention and love. That being said, none of this is rocket science and we all want the best while adopting a pet.
