How to Handle A Coughing and Choking Pet

Seeing your pet having a coughing fit can be alarming, and you may think it’s choking on something. How do you do a Heimlich maneuver on a pet? The good news is that many coughing jags are just that — bouts of coughing. Many things can trigger it, from dust in the air to Bordetella and other respiratory infections. You first instinct may be to help your pet to stop choking, but this can be dangerous. Your first step should be to determine whether your dog or cat is choking at all.

Pets that are choking have a hard time getting a breath of air. They can’t inhale because of an obstruction in their throat. Coughing pets, on the other hand, have no problem inhaling. If your animal is inhaling normally this might be an illness that needs veterinary care, but it’s not choking. If your pet really is choking, however, there are things you can do to help.

What to Do With a Choking Pet

Choking is one of the most common emergencies we see at Animal Emergency Care of Braselton. It can be frightening, but quick action on your part can help immensely. Your care depends on whether your pet is conscious or unconscious.

If your pet is unconscious sweep its mouth by sliding a finger down one side to the back of the throat and back up, loosening any solid objects you may find. Perform rescue breathing by blowing into your pet’s nose until you see its chest rise. Get your pet to our office immediately.

For pets that are conscious, the most important thing is to keep them calm. If your pet is overheated apply cool wet towels over its body, especially on the ears, feet, and belly. Get help driving so you can keep the pet calm and get it to our office immediately.
