1. Reddening of the ears-the area around the ear turns red and also the ears themselves
2. Hair loss in the ears
3. Scratching
4. Loss of balance

Causes of Ear infections

Certain things can cause ear infections to your pets.

1. Ear Mites

These mites are a common cause of infections in dogs. However, they are hard to see with the naked human eye, and you may require an otoscope to see them. These mites are contagious, and dogs easily infect each other.

2.Allergies

This is a common cause of the ear infections. Allergies cause inflammation and itching of the ears. Dogs that suffer from allergies such as environmental or food related are more prone to ear infections.

3. Bacterial and Yeast

These organisms result in inflammation of the ears and cause wax build-up in the ears. The wax buildup in the ears harbors infections.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Ear infections

If your dogs show any of these symptoms, it is important that you contact the vet who will examine them. The veterinarian examines the ear canal and drum using a magnifying ear cone. The dog may require sedation especially if the infection is painful. Samples may be taken from the ear discharge and taken to the lab for further examination.

Treatment

Treatment may vary depending on the cause or severity of the infection. The veterinarian will recommend the best treatment suited for your pet. For bacterial infections, oral medication informs of antibiotics is prescribed. Professional ear cleaning is also common in treating the infection. The cleaning is done for about five to seven days. Some dogs may suffer from serious ear infections that may require surgery which is done by removal of the entire ear canal.

It is essential that you take your dogs on regular checkup with your veterinarian so that in case your pet has an infection it can be diagnosed early.
