Skunks and your Dog

Skunks And Dog: Is There A Way To Eliminate That Stinking Smell?

Skunks usually expel an awful smell. And for that reason, pet owners should always keep their canines away from these stinking creatures. But as the warmer weather approaches, skunks are more likely to become active at dusk and dawn. Most people often ask, how does one deal with a skunk spray?

Skunks usually eat meat and vegetation and they belong to same family group as weasels. They are active when it’s hot, particularly when the sun sets. Generally, they are non-aggressive animals that keep their distance from other animals. Whey they are scared in their element, they emit a foul-smelling spray.

What to do when your dog is sprayed urine by a skunk

If you realize your furry friend has been sprayed by a skunk, you should act fast. This is important because the spray can worsen when left unwashed. In fact, if you don’t wash it out immediately, it can become hard to remove the smell.

The first thing you need to do is place the smelly dog outside to prevent the smell from soaking the furniture or carpet. Next, wear old clothes that you can throw away when you finish washing your dog. Ensure you purchase disposable gloves as well.

Wash your dog using hydrogen peroxide and baking soda

A blend of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and liquid washing soap will help eliminate the stinking smell from your dog. However, remember to only use the recommended dosage of hydrogen peroxide to avoid burning your dog’s delicate skin.

Therefore, to get rid of the odor effectively, it is important to use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. As a word of caution, you should mix the solution in an open bowl to prevent an explosion due to the chemical reaction caused by the mixture.

If your dog has been bitten by the skunk, you should visit the vet immediately. Skunks often carry rabies and other harmful bacteria that can lead to broken skin.

While these animals emit a foul smelling spray, they are harmless and easy-going. To prevent your dog from coming into contact with skunks, try to clear your backyard by removing all debris and bushes.

Conclusion

The foul smell that skunks emit is usually harmless but you should wash your dog immediately if it has been sprayed by the smell. But if your dog has been bitten by a skunk, visit the vet as soon as possible.
