What Does a Catnip Do to Your Cat?

The catnip is a plant that belongs to the mint family which means it comes with a special smell. Catnips have a special effect on cats especially when inheld. Hyperactivity behaviors, increased playfulness and playing with other cats. It has been shown, nevertheless, that the sensitivity to cats reacting to the catnip smell is hereditary with approximately 60% of cats showing reactivity to its smell.

Effects of Catnip on Cats

Research has shown that catnip contains a compound known as nepetalactone that is attractive to cats. Nepetalactone increases the cat’s curiosity drawing it near the plant causing it to investigate the plant and possibly play with the plant. Most cats react to catnip by rolling, flipping, rubbing, and eventually zoning out. Cats may also meow or growl at the same time while other cats become hyperactive or downright aggressive, especially if you approach them for a period not more than 10 minutes which may die out afterwards. A two-hour period is needed to reset the cat and make them reactive to catnip again. Researchers suspect that catnip targets feline ‘happy’ receptors in the brain. Catnip is, nevertheless, dangerous to cats especially when ingested. Owners should be cautious when exposing it to cats lest they feed on it.

How Catnip Works in Cats

When cats inhale catnip, nepetalactone adheres to receptors in the nose, causing sensory stimulation to neurons leading to the brain. It is believed that nepetalactone caused release of dopamine in the brain causing feelings of happiness and bliss.

How to Use Catnip

Catnip can be purchased in many forms, including fresh catnip as a plant, dried catnip or sprays and cat toys.

Cats may overdose on this chemical and cause some serious effects. Cats which overdose on this chemical may experience vomiting, diarrhea, trouble when walking, or disorientation. Cat owners should ensure that only a small amount of catnip is used at a time and cats should never be forced to smell or ingest it. A veterinary officer should be consulted before using catnip.

Catnip can be used for a variety of uses like enrichment, training and to help with anxiety.

Other Uses of Catnip

Catnip is not just meant for cats. The plant has been grown for medicinal purposes and made into tea offering calming properties similar to chamomile.
