A swollen stomach does not usually bode well with the health of your pet, especially in dogs. You see, most often than not, it is usually indicative of a serious underlying issue that can prove fatal if not taken care of within the shortest timeframe possible. Having said that, sometimes a swollen stomach can be nothing more serious than a simple case of weight gain. Here’s a quick premise on this topic.
Sometimes it can be extremely hard to tell whether your pup’s stomach is bloated or simply a case of weight gain. As it is often the case, you can tell the difference by checking the consistency of their abdomen. A bloated stomach is usually hard and tends to take an unusual shape. Bloating can be pretty serious and you should seek immediate veterinary attention as soon as possible.
As is often the case, there are quite a number of reasons your dog can have a swollen abdomen. And this includes but is not limited to the following;
One of the most common and dangerous causative agents of bloating can be Gastric Dilation Volvulus (GDV). And if urgent action is not taken, it can be very detrimental to your pup’s health or even become fatal. Usually, GDV occurs when your poodle’s distended and bloated stomach rotates which traps the gas inside consequently blocking off the blood supply to the stomach.
Another condition that could easily result in your pup’s stomach swelling is peritonitis. And it can be quite serious considering that it is usually a result of your dog’s intestines or stomach rupturing. The condition is extremely painful and you may notice that your dog becomes reluctant to move.
Another common cause of a dog’s distended or swollen stomach is Cushing’s syndrome, also known as hyperadrenocorticism. A dog with Cushing’s Syndrome usually has a pot-bellied look which is usually accompanied by extreme hunger and thirst. Additionally, some dogs may start to lose their hair or show increased panting as the condition deteriorates with time.
Usually, the best course of action involves getting immediate veterinary attention as soon as possible. And this is mostly because you may never know the exact cause of swelling of your poodle’s stomach until a trained professional takes an incisive look at him.
