Animal Fight Prevention and Treatment From Your Braselton Veterinarian

Animal FightsAt Animal Emergency Care of Braselton, our veterinarian and team have the experience and resources to assist your pet in nearly any emergency or urgent care situation. We know just how scary it can be when your pet experiences a medical emergency, which is why our practice is open from 6PM until 8AM on Monday through Friday, and 24 hours on the weekends. While we see and handle any number of medical emergencies here in our office, one of the more common injuries we see are sustained as a result of animal fights.

Animal Fights: Common Injuries and What to Do

Unfortunately, animal fights can occur at any time; even household pets who normally seem to get along can get into fights, although they are most common among pets who have never met before. Often times, an outdoor pet will get into a confrontation with a stray or other outdoor pet, or dogs that frequent the same dog park may fight over territorial issues.

Either way, if you see your pet in the midst of a fight, it’s important to act quickly. If safe to do so, try to shoo the pets away from each other. If you’re unsure whether the other animal involved is a stray, it is best to stay away from the animal and instead yell or otherwise distract the animal from afar. Often times, loud noises will scare the scrapping animals away from each other.

Once you’re safely able to get to your pet, it’s important to assess his or her injuries. Cuts and lacerations are the most common injury sustained in an animal fight. These can come from another pet’s sharp claws or even from a bite. If your cat or dog has minor cuts, apply pressure to stop any bleeding and do your best to bandage them until you can see your vet. If there is any significant bleeding, it is important to see an emergency vet right away.

When to See an Emergency Vet

Sometimes, injuries sustained in an animal fight can be life-threatening to your dog or cat. Aside from uncontrollable bleeding, pet owners should also be on the lookout for signs of:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Broken bones or fractures
  • Seizures
  • Unconsciousness
  • Severe pain

Even if you don’t see any obvious signs of a problem, keep a close eye on your dog or cat. If your pet isn’t acting quite him or herself, or if there is a lack of appetite or energy, it may be wise to schedule an appointment with your regular vet. However, if your pet has seizures or shows any of the other signs listed above, it is best to see an emergency vet for treatment.
